Back From Wolf Laurel in North Carolina

Well, back and unpacked from a great week in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Good timing color-wise with many shades of yellows, reds, and greens with oranges and rusts thrown in. The sunrises were spectacular for those of us that could drag ourselves out of bed on those cool mornings in this spectacular two story house/cabin perched on the side of a winding mountain road at an elevation of approximately 4500 feet. The Wolf Laurel Resort area (north of Mars Hill which is north of Asheville, NC) is a wonderful place to spend some time relaxing, hiking, golfing, skiing or my favorite – shooting pictures. And its even more fun when you’re surrounded by good friends.

Had a great time kickin’ back and relaxing. Cooking, eating, sleeping, golfing, sharpening my billiard skills, driving winding roads, watching old Twilight Zone episodes and of course, looking for that elusive photo of a lifetime for CurrentEscape. I think together, our group shot over 300 images and I’ve picked out a few for viewing below.

I continue to reinforce the fact that the main two ingredients in shooting good photos is composition and light. Subject matter is one thing, but how those elements are positioned and how light is affecting the frame is what matters most. It doesn’t matter how many megapixels your camera has or whether it’s the latest equipment you’re shooting with, timing and viewpoint is everything.

It will be interesting to see what CurrentEscape does with some of the photos below. Some photos just lend themselves naturally to the photo/watercolor transformation art process. Others are best when left in their original state, right out of the camera with no alterations.

It does take certain characteristics in a photo to make it as a VisualCurrentEscape piece of art. I’m beginning to feel a lot has to do with the tonal range of certain elements once they are photographed.

That’s all for now. Anticipating Wyoming and the Grand Tetons coming up this coming May. Look for a few projects between now and then from our own backyard. Looks like it might be a snowy winter.
